NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Delhi minister Atishi will take over as the new chief minister of India's national capital territory after the resignation of incumbent Arvind Kejriwal, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party said on Tuesday.

Indian opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal picked Delhi minister Atishi to replace him as chief minister of the capital territory on Tuesday, allowing him to focus on winning a fresh mandate in elections due next year after getting bail in a graft case.

The Aam Aadmi Party has said Atishi will take charge as Delhi’s chief minister. Incumbent Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to officially resign on Tuesday.

The announcement was made by Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal during a meeting with his party’s legislators.

India’s top court has allowed the release on bail of a prominent opposition leader and chief minister of New Delhi who was arrested nearly six months ago on charges of receiving bribes from a liquor distributor.

Prominent opposition leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has resigned from his post, days after getting bail in a corruption case. Kejriwal spent five months in jail in connection with a now-scrapped alcohol sales policy.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) party had initially decided that only Atishi would be sworn in, however, it was later determined that her council of ministers would also take the oath.

Arvind Kejriwal resigned as Delhi CM, handing over to Atishi, who aims to restore him in upcoming elections amid political turmoil.
