While the New York Jets were in the process of beating the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football, New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer was putting pen to paper on a new contract with the team that drafted him.

Dawson Mercer signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the New Jersey Devils on Friday. It has an average annual value of $4 million. The 22-year-old forward, who was a restricted free agent, had been absent from Devils training camp, which opened Wednesday.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Devils rewarded productive young forward Dawson Mercer with a three-year, $12 million contract on Friday. Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald said the 22-year-old will earn $3 million this coming season, $4.75 million the following year and $4.25 million in the final year, 2026-27.

The forward has signed a three-year deal with the Devils worth $12 million. Until today, Mercer had been the team’s only player at training camp without a finalized contract. Mercer, who’s still only 22, has played in 246 straight games to start his career, notching 64 goals and 131 points in that span.

To say that the first day of training camp was intense is an understatement. New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe had his players bag skating before they even did a single drill.
